Course Objectives
After completing this course you will be able to:
- Identify signs and symptoms of clots, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE).
- Identify patient-specific risk factors for DVTs/clotting.
- Provide appropriate education, treatment, and management to reduce the risk of clot recurrence and secondary complications.
Note: This training focuses on venous blood clots in adults, rather than arterial blood clots or venous clots in children.
Target Audience
This series of five lessons is intended for the following healthcare professionals:
- Registered nurses
- Nurse practitioners
- Pharmacists
- Physician assistants
This training will help these professionals become more confident and knowledgeable in working with patients with thrombosis or thrombophilia.
CME
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME®) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention designates this educational activity for a maximum of 3.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Continuing Education designated for Non-Physicians:
Non-physicians will receive a certificate of participation.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is accredited as a provider of Continuing Nursing Education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
