Become a Certified NBCA Community Thrombassador and sign up for our next training on Saturday, February 22, 2025 from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

To take the first step toward becoming a Thrombassador, we invite you to complete this pre-registration form, below. By providing some essential details about yourself and sharing your motivation for joining the program, you will help us better assess your suitability for this vital role in our mission. An NBCA team member will be in touch with more details and the official training registration link as soon as possible.

Please note: We have a policy in place that encourages individuals to wait six months following their diagnosis before becoming a Thrombassador. This is to ensure that individuals have adequate time to focus on their own recovery, healing, and adjustment to life after a blood clot.

San Antonio Spurs player Victor Wembanyama has been diagnosed with a blood clot in his right shoulder, the team announced today. He is expected to miss the remainder of the basketball season.

The National Blood Clot Alliance sends well wishes to Wembanyama for a swift and full recovery.

Wembanyama, considered a top-10 player in the NBA, joins other star athletes who have suffered from blood clots, including Trey Smith, who played in two Super Bowls with the Kansas City Chiefs; Katie Hoff, Olympic swimmer and medalist; and Chris Bosh, former professional basketball player.

🌟 Honoring History, Building a Healthier Future

This Black History Month, we recognize the health disparities Black and Brown communities have faced throughout history while honoring the legacy of Dr. James McCune Smith, the first Black American to earn a medical degree. His pioneering achievements paved the way for greater diversity in healthcare, yet systemic racism and discrimination continue to have a profound impact on the health of Black and Brown individuals, affecting health outcomes, access, and the prevalence of chronic diseases and medical conditions, including blood clots.

But reflection alone isn't enough. Now is the time for action.

To help address these health disparities, the National Blood Clot Alliance is launching the B.L.A.C.K. (Black Lives Advocating for Clot Knowledge) Church Bus Tour in March for Blood Clot Awareness Month. This public health initiative will travel to churches and community hospitals across six Southern regions where more than 55% of all Black Americans live, delivering life-saving education about blood clots.

NBCA is honored to partner with so many outstanding community organizations to address health disparities head-on.

Together, we will continue to advocate for lasting change and work toward equitable health for all Americans.

2025 marks the 10th anniversary of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a milestone in the global effort to promote gender equality and women's empowerment.

Gender equality in science is crucial for building a better future for everyone, but women and girls continue to face systemic barriers and biases in pursuing scientific careers.

The National Blood Clot Alliance is proud to share that women make up 60% of our Council of Emerging Researchers in Thrombosis (CERT), a significantly higher number compared to the overall rate of women in STEM fields in the U.S., which is 34%.

Bravo to Dr. Dana Angelini and Dr. Rushad Patell, co-chairs of CERT, for leading this effort to help close the #gendergap in science!

Recovery can feel overwhelming, but movement is key to staying healthy. Our 100,000 Reasons Challenge in March is a great way to ease back into activity safely while honoring the 100,000 lives lost to blood clots each year.

During this Challenge, we’re tracking active minutes. That means you can participate by moving any way you wish: using gym equipment like the rowing machine, elliptical, or weights; walking your dog; doing yoga, Pilates, or barre; or even dancing.

No matter how you stay active, every bit of physical activity counts toward recovery and prevention, says Dr. Jean Connors, hematologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
