2nd Annual Kicks for Clots Tournament

The National Blood Clot Alliance (NBCA) is honored to be the recipient of funds being raised by the 2nd Annual Kicks for Clots Tournament again this year. It’s time for dozens of energetic blood clot awareness enthusiasts to drive their message home in a shore-side kickball tournament on September 10th, 2011 from 10 am to 2 pm at the softball fields on 5th, 6th and Haven Streets in Ocean City, New Jersey!

Organized by Cheryl Fishman, a volunteer for the NBCA and survivor of blood clots, the 2010 kickball tournament raised over $10,000 for education and public awareness about the risks of blood clots and clotting disorders. Many Ocean City, NJ businesses rallied around the event by donating OC favorites to keep players and spectators nourished and hydrated. The event received attention from numerous TV, radio, and newspaper outlets, and incited smiles and cheers from both the young and the young at heart.

Blood clots affect individuals and families more than most people realize. Approximately 350,000 – 600,000 people have blood clots in the leg (deep vein thrombosis / DVT) or in the lung (pulmonary embolism / PE) each year. About 100,000 of these individuals die from their clot, which is roughly 1 of 3 of those affected. Studies from the Mayo Clinic reveal that in the state of New Jersey there are approximately 25,560 DVTs and PEs along with 8,500 deaths annually.

Nathan Fishman, Cheryl’s brother, and 2011 KFC committee member says, “I would be down the shore for a kickball tournament any day; the fact that it is for a good cause that is close to my family makes it all the more special and exciting.” Spots are available for teams that want to participate in this year’s tournament.
