Judi Kaplan Elkin,MEd, Director of Regional Development and Education for the National Blood Clot Alliance (NBCA) will present at the 2nd National Conference on Blood Disorders, hosted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta on Tuesday, March 13. Elkin’s presentation, entitled Creation and Use of Stop the Clot Forum® Toolkit for Patient Education Programs, will focus on NBCA’s development of a do-it-yourself guide (Toolkit) for volunteers to use execute Stop The Clot® branded patient seminars in major US markets, to increase ability to expand its’ secondary prevention reach in preventing complications in patients with blood clots or clotting disorders. NBCA’s Brownstein Presents Data Indicating Gaps in Hospital VTE Prophylaxis Demonstrate Need for Technology to Promote Patient Safety in Hospitals at CDC’s 2nd National Conference on Blood Disorders
Alan Brownstein, MPH, CEO for the National Blood Clot Alliance (NBCA) will present at the 2nd National Conference on Blood Disorders, hosted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta on Monday, March 12. Brownstein’s presentation is entitled Data Indicating Gaps in Hospital VTE Prophylaxis Demonstrate Need for Technology to Promote Patient Safety in Hospitals. Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is hospital acquired in 70% of all cases, and is the most common preventable cause of hospital death. Improved awareness and use of evidence-based VTE prophylaxis in hospitals can prevent morbidity/mortality. The National Blood Clot Alliance (NBCA) conducted a survey to document the importance of gaps in practice of evidence-based prophylaxis reported among three patient groups at increased risk for VTE. The National Blood Clot Alliance (NBCA), as part of a cooperative agreement with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), revised its website to provide greater access to online resources for people seeking information on diagnosis, prevention and treatment of blood clots. McCann’s presentation focuses on NBCA’s Webinar development, content and evaluation of the “Clinical Pearls” Series. There is a need to increase awareness and knowledge in healthcare professionals (HCPs) about prevention, risk, and treatment of thrombosis and thrombophilia (T/T) as well as to share strategies to create a therapeutic alliance with patients to promote adherence. Brownstein is presenting on behalf of lead author Greg Maynard, MD, MSc, SFHM about an awareness survey conducted with recently hospitalized patients. The topic, Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism: Awareness and Prophylaxis Practices Reported by Recently Hospitalized Patients, focuses on hospitalization as a major risk factor for DVT/PE, with a ten-fold increased risk for venous thromboembolism (VTE) among hospitalized patients with acute medical illness, and about 1 in 10 hospital deaths related to PE. Brownstein is presenting on behalf of lead author Frederick R. Rickles, MD about an awareness and prophylaxis practices reported by cancer patients. The topic, Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism: Awareness and Prophylaxis Practices Reported by Cancer Patients, focuses on measuring DVT/PE awareness among patients with cancer and identifying gaps in evidence-based prophylaxis reported by these patients. Active cancer patients are at increased risk for DVT/PE when hospitalized, after surgery and during cancer therapy. Mortality is greater among cancer patients with DVT/PE than among those with cancer alone. More…
