NBCA Addresses Health Disparities Through its First-Ever B.L.A.C.K Church Bus Tour

The National Blood Clot Alliance (NBCA) proudly announces the launch of its inaugural B.L.A.C.K. Church Bus Tour (Black Lives Advocating for Clot Knowledge) during Blood Clot Awareness Month in March 2025.

This initiative will visit Black churches in Atlanta, GA; Birmingham, AL; Charlotte, NC; Houston, TX; Memphis, TN; and New Orleans, LA—regions with more than 55% of the Black population—to address critical health disparities in blood clot education and awareness.

Blood clots claim 100,000 lives annually and disproportionately affect Black Americans, who face up to 60% higher incidence and mortality rates. The tour will offer free screenings, expert speakers, and practical tools to help communities recognize and prevent this silent killer.

“Information about blood clots isn’t reaching our communities,” said NBCA board member Arshell Brooks Harris, who lost her daughter to a blood clot. “Nobody should die from this preventable condition. We’re taking awareness directly to the people.”

Shirley Bondon of the Black Clergy Collaborative of Memphis emphasized the importance of this effort: “Knowledge is power. With awareness, we can reduce blood clot incidence and mortality in the Black community.”

Churches along the tour route are invited to host events, with NBCA providing support to ensure success. This initiative is a call to action for Congress to fund national blood clot education, as inaction costs 100,000 lives annually.
