Celebrating the Collective Power of Our Grassroots Volunteers

Did you know that the word thrombus is the medical term for a blood clot? It’s also the inspiration behind the name of our incredible NBCA Community Thrombassador program—a growing network of passionate blood clot survivors and caregivers working to raise awareness about blood clots and sharing their personal blood clot stories in their local communities.

Since launching in 2022, our Thrombassadors have spread their wings far and wide, representing 120 volunteers across nearly all 50 states and reaching communities beyond the U.S., including Scotland and South Africa! And we’re just getting started.

Our Thrombassadors have been busy this fall! Here are some examples of the awareness efforts our Thrombassadors have championed in just the past two months:

  • Memorial events honoring those who have died from PEs, including a golf event, BBQ, clay shoot, and tailgate
  • Educational talks at community centers
  • Blood clot educational materials distributed at youth sports games, schools, church events, and community festivals

“These dedicated Thrombassadors are driven by the hope that no one else will have to endure what they’ve experienced,” says Stephanie Martinez, NBCA Thrombassador Program Manager. “As a survivor myself, I started as a Thrombassador, and now I’m honored to lead this powerful movement.”

Through initial training and opportunities for ongoing engagement—like our recent Thrombassador Vision Seminar—these volunteers are connecting, collaborating, and setting goals to make a lasting impact.
