On July 31, 2021, after being misdiagnosed and sent home almost a week prior, I finally received a diagnosis that would forever change my life: sub-massive pulmonary emboli and pulmonary infarction. I call it “the back pain that saved my life.”
My primary symptom was upper back tightness and discomfort, which I later learned was due to scarring in my lung. If I hadn’t taken it seriously, I was told I would not be here today.
The days leading up to my diagnosis were filled with confusion and fear as I struggled to understand what was happening to my body. When the diagnosis finally came, it was both a relief and a new source of anxiety. I spent nearly a week in the ICU, fighting to recover from this life-threatening condition.
The trauma of this experience led to a diagnosis of PTSD, a silent companion that I’ve learned to navigate with strength and support. Despite the struggles, each day is a reminder of my perseverance and the preciousness of life.
Advocating for awareness about this condition has been incredibly rewarding. Through sharing my story, I’ve connected with many who have faced similar battles. This experience taught me the importance of community, the power of resilience and, most importantly, how crucial it is to love those around you at all times.
My life has changed in that I’ve become very focused on health optimization, advocating for this cause, and driving awareness. I met the NBCA team through the Facebook support group and have since become very involved. I now serve as a member of NBCA’s Board of Directors.
My advice to others is to seek mental health resources while going through this experience.
