Misdiagnosed With a Pulled Muscle: Dominique and Michelle’s Story

Misdiagnosed With a Pulled Muscle: Dominique and Michelle’s Story

As told by her mother, Michelle

Dominque, known to her friends and family as “Meeka,” loved the Maine outdoors and spent as much time as possible at camp on Moosehead Lake. Growing up, she enjoyed playing soccer, basketball, and softball. Meeka was a member of the Windsor Historical Society and volunteered at the Windsor Fair every year.

She graduated from Erskine Academy in 2019 and earned an associate’s degree in biological science from Kennebec Valley Community College. Meeka made her family proud by graduating cum laude from the University of Maine at Augusta with a bachelor’s degree in justice studies. She was aspiring to become a game warden for the State of Maine.

A few months later, in July 2024, her shoulder had been sore for about a week. She saw a doctor, and they thought she might have pulled something. She was told to take prednisone for a week and then follow up with physical therapy if it didn’t feel better.  There were no further tests done.

Meeka passed away on July 22, 2024, from a pulmonary embolism. She was never tested for factor V Leiden, even though her mother has it.  It’s unknown whether Meeka was also positive for the clotting disorder.

Meeka will be remembered for her intelligence, strong convictions, and outgoing personality. She would make sure to visit the family and make time for all. She was always busy, but no matter what, she never forgot her roots.
