Rev. Dorothy S. Boulware, managing editor of @afro

Rev. Dorothy S. Boulware, managing editor of @afronews — the longest-running African-American family-owned newspaper in the U.S — suddenly collapsed one morning two years ago.

At the hospital, she was quickly diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism.

Her medical team emphasized how serious it was by telling her: “Usually, when we see patients with lungs like yours, they’re already dead.”

We’re grateful for Rev. Boulware’s recovery and for sharing her story in Afro News and building awareness of NBCA’s B.L.A.C.K. Church Bus Tour — Black Lives Advocating for Clot Knowledge.

Black Americans have up to a 60% higher rate of blood clot incidence and mortality than their white counterparts.

This is why NBCA has launched the bus tour — to spread awareness at churches and community hospitals in Southern cities where more than 55% of the Black population in the U.S. live. After a successful week in Charlotte, the bus is on its way to Atlanta!

- Denise and Paul Englert of New York state lost their 19-year-old son, Paul, to a pulmonary embolism in 2013. Thanks to their advocacy, the Buffalo Niagara International Airport launched a public awareness campaign about preventing blood clots while traveling.

- Lisa Lane launched her month-long campaign of spreading awareness at universities in Tennessee. A former NCAA college basketball player who was first diagnosed with a DVT during pregnancy, she kicked off the campaign at East Tennessee State University and will be at the University of Tennessee, University of Memphis, and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga during March.

- PE survivor Lainey Toennies championed the effort to have March designated as Blood Clot Awareness Month in Wisconsin.

- Georgia residents Teri Stanfield and Veronica Krutchen lost their sons — who were both football players — to PEs in 2024. Together, they successfully pushed for March to be declared Blood Clot Awareness Month in Georgia.

(Speaking of Georgia, NBCA's B.L.A.C.K. Church Bus Tour -- Black Lives Advocating for Clot Knowledge -- is on its way to Georgia to spread blood clot awareness in and around Atlanta later this week!)

Dr. Mark Lewis, oncologist at Intermountain Health in Utah, developed a pulmonary embolism following cancer surgery.

Rare Disease Day, observed annually on the last day of February, raises awareness about rare diseases and their impact on patients’ lives. Several rare diseases and genetic conditions can increase the risk of developing blood clots, including:

- Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS): An autoimmune disorder in which the immune system mistakenly attacks normal blood proteins, increasing the risk of clot formation.

- Antithrombin III Deficiency: Antithrombin is a protein that helps prevent excessive clotting. A deficiency can lead to an increased likelihood of blood clot formation.

- Protein C Deficiency: Protein C is a natural anticoagulant. A deficiency in this protein raises the risk of abnormal clotting.

- Protein S Deficiency: Like protein C, protein S plays a key role in regulating blood clotting. A deficiency can lead to a higher risk of developing clots.

- Prothrombin Gene Mutation (Factor II Mutation): A genetic variation that increases the production of prothrombin, a clotting factor, leading to a heightened risk of blood clots.

- May-Thurner Syndrome: A structural condition where the right common iliac artery compresses the left common iliac vein against the spine, restricting blood flow and increasing clot risk.

This Black History Month, we recognize the health

This Black History Month, we recognize the health disparities Black and Brown communities have faced throughout history while honoring the legacy of Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler, America’s first Black female medical doctor, who also championed medical training for nurses, and published a book on preventive health care. Dr. Crumpler spent years in Virginia after the Civil War, treating newly emancipated Black women and children living without health services and advocating for their care.

For centuries, Black communities have faced barriers to equitable healthcare, leaving a lasting mark and influencing everything from maternal health outcomes to chronic disease rates.

Blood clots are no exception. Black Americans face 30-60% higher rates of life-threatening blood clots than their white counterparts and remain a leading cause of Black maternal mortality in the U.S. This is unacceptable. The time to act is now.

NBCA’s B.L.A.C.K. (Black Lives Advocating for Clot Knowledge) Church Bus Tour, launching 3/1 will empower communities with education, raise awareness about blood clots, and provide resources for prevention and early diagnosis. This public health initiative will travel to churches and community hospitals across six Southern regions where more than 55% of all Black Americans live.

NBCA is honored to partner with so many outstanding organizations to address health disparities head-on. Together, we will continue to advocate for lasting change and work toward equitable health for all Americans.
